Many media providers desire restrictions on content delivery for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons include keeping viewers connected to their sites to allow delivery of advertising for each viewing, monitoring usage, preventing offline viewing, and other reasons. However, when the content has greater value to the viewer and provider by being in the possession of the viewer, these delivery methods fall short.
For example, the purpose of a movie trailer is inspire a viewer to buy a movie ticket, BD, DVD, etc. of a movie. The return for the movie producer is not from advertising on a trailer site, but from the sale to a viewer. Restricting the downloading and potential sharing of a trailer work against the movie producer, but do keep traffic on the trailer site. By allowing free distribution of a new movie trailer, a greater anticipation of the release can be developed. Availability of older movie trailers can reignite interest.
A central site for movie trailers that includes older or less popular movies and providing links to distributors could do well according to “long-tail” principles.
